Volunteer Invitation

If you enjoy the outdoors and sharing your love of nature with others, then you will enjoy volunteering at Shipley Nature Center. Appropriate experiences are available for those wishing to enhance and maintain professional skill sets.

Shipley Nature Center relies on the help of dedicated adult and student volunteers for many aspects of the Center's maintenance and operations.

We need a cheerful person to help our visitor services staff answer phones, keep the gift shop tidy, help with small clerical duties and more between the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Monday through Saturdays. A few hours on any of these days would help.

There are many other ways to volunteer. Almost any skill is needed and appreciated at SNC, including:

  • Help maintain the native plant and butterfly gardens
  • Help rid the nature preserve annual weeds and invasive plants
  • Assist with marketing, fundraising or newsletters
  • Design and build educational displays
  • Help build and maintain trails
  • Perform facility maintenance and carpentry services
  • Propagate native plants from seeds, cuttings and divisions
  • Provide docent-led tours
  • Participate in monthly bird surveys
  • Adopt a wild garden

We look forward to meeting you and appreciate your interest in helping us provide nature education and encourage stewardship in this very urbanized part of Southern California.

To sign up to become a volunteer, please complete the Volunteer Application. You may bring the completed application to the SNC office, or email it to info@shipleynature.org.

Restoration Days

Restoration ProjectWe no longer have the first Saturday in the month designated as Restoration Day.

The reason is that Shipley is now in a maintenance mode that requires more training and management skills from our volunteers.

We will provide training; pruning, planting, irrigation and weed guides to assist volunteers. We will require a day and time commitment from our volunteers.  Right now volunteers are being welcomed during Monday thru Friday, 9:00a through noon where we can count on their showing up on a regular basis.  Groups may check our website for upcoming projects.

Over the last 9 years -- under the management of the Friends -- the Center has emerged from being an overgrown tangle of weeds to the restored Center it is today.  We very much appreciate the various members of the community who are responsible for the success of the habitat restoration and maintenance.

Groups of ten or more, please call ahead to sign-up. Contact Luanne Cook, Habitat Manager, at (714) 842-4772.
