RAINWATER HOG TANKS INSTALLED AT SHIPLEY
The Los Angeles Conservation Corps had twelve to fifteen Corps members working 4 days to install a wonderful new water conservation system at Shipley Nature Center. Two supervisors were with the crew. Approximately 240 hours were donated by the LACC. The Orange County Corps was also at Shipley for 2 days with 4 members and a Supervisor.
Special thanks to Boeing for the grant for the materials from Rainwater HOG. The rain gutter and filter unit were also donated.
Guy Stivers made the arrangements to have the Corps to do their water harvesting project at Shipley. Guy prepared the plans for installing the water harvesting units and the improvements to the courtyard path. The "guy" drains were also installed. What a great new look for entrance path. DG that was removed was used in areas surrounding the Cart and Nursery sheds.
Spreading mulch was part of the project. Kay Goddard was able to get 4 cubic yards of mulch donated from Agromin Premium Soil Products. With mulch stored at Shipley for two years there was almost enough mulch to complete the project. These projects were all completed by the Corps.
Thanks to Shirley Dettloff the water harvesting project was on the front page of the Independent newspaper Thursday July 21. Two photos and a lengthy article were wonderful advertisements for our program.
Jean Nagy and Nancy Harris, what a team! They had help, off and on, from the Corps to complete the hidden garden projects. Four dumpster loads were removed. Another great team, Luanne Cook and Gino Ponce, had help with habitat projects from LA and Orange Corps.
Nancy's husband, Jim, one day supervised Corp members in pruning in the Demonstration Garden. Bill Eggleson and Chuck Glenn removed the redwood divider in the retail Nursery and installed a support for the water pipe.
In the eye of the storm Carol Williams was able keep Shipley open! Nice to have a calm person among the chaos.
Total cost of the projects to Shipley was under $200. The value of the projects and hours the Corps provided is well over $6,000.
Thanks to Simon Dominguez from Rainwater HOG LLC who had recently inspected the units to ensure its operational efficiency. Visit http://rainwaterhog.com for more information.
