Shipley Nature Center Monthly Bird Survey
October 26, 2012

Surveyors: Pat & Dick Cabe, David Crow, Jerry Donohue, Valerie Glass, Ross Griswold, Richard Harden, Lena Hayashi, Terry Hill, Bob Hogan, Vic Leipzig, Tim Maas, Bob & Fiona Parker, Jim Roe and James Stacy.

16 surveyors came out on this beautiful fall morning. It was wonderful to see Tim again and of course our David Crow from England!

The absolute highlight of the morning was a beautiful, mature female Acorn Woodpecker in the Oak Woodland. All of the surveyors were able to see her and some took photos. She was storing acorns in a dead tree trunk. Kudos needs to be given to Shipley's policy of keeping dead trees intact unless they are of danger to people. Also, the practice of the gardeners to let the understory grow beneath the trees and bushes, helps to attract and protect many species of animals and birds. These are a few of the reasons Shipley is so special!

Please enjoy the attached survey.
